3D Printer Filament Guide for India: PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA and TPU Explained
Materials guide · 3D printing · 6 min read
When a print fails, most of us blame the printer. We recalibrate, tweak settings, maybe even order new parts. But a surprising number of failed prints come down to something much simpler: the spool. The wrong material for the job, damp filament or a spool that was never meant to run at your printer's speed can ruin a print no matter how good the machine is.
That's why choosing the right 3D printer filament matters as much as choosing the printer itself. This guide explains the main materials, how India's climate changes the rules, and how to match a spool to what you're making.

Why PLA isn't always the answer
PLA is the easiest material, and it's where most people start, which is sensible. But it softens at a fairly low temperature, around 55 to 60 degrees Celsius. A PLA phone stand left on a car dashboard during a Chennai summer can warp. For anything functional or exposed to heat or sun, PETG, ASA or ABS is usually the better long-term choice.
The Indian climate problem nobody warns you about
Most filament advice assumes a temperate climate. India doesn't have one. In Chennai, Mumbai and other coastal cities, humidity regularly climbs above 70 to 90 per cent during the monsoon. Many filaments, including PETG, TPU, nylon and ABS, absorb moisture from the air.
When damp filament goes through a hot nozzle, the water turns to steam. You'll see stringing, tiny bubbles, rough surfaces and weak layers. A spool that printed beautifully in December can misbehave in August just because it was left open. PLA is more forgiving, but even PLA suffers after a monsoon spent on a shelf.
Simple storage and drying habits
-
Keep open spools in airtight containers or zip bags with silica gel.
-
Dry suspect spools before printing: PLA at around 50°C, PETG at 65°C, ABS or ASA at 70°C, for roughly four to six hours.
-
Use a food dehydrator or an oven on its lowest setting, and keep a close eye on it.
-
Buy from a seller who stores spools properly and ships them vacuum-sealed.
Matching filament to your project
Beginners and everyday printing: PLA+ is forgiving and gives good surface quality. It's the sensible default for models and prototypes.
Functional parts: PETG gives strength and some chemical resistance without the fuss of ABS. Choose ASA or ABS when the part will see heat above 60 degrees.
Outdoor use: ASA is the right choice for sun and monsoon exposure, because it holds its colour and shape. ABS and PLA don't cope as well with UV.
Flexible parts: TPU suits cases, bumpers and grips. It prints best on direct-drive extruders.
Colourful prints: If your printer supports multiple spools, you can create multi-colour models without painting afterwards.
A word on carbon-fibre filament
Carbon-fibre blends are stiff and impressive, but they're abrasive. They'll wear down a standard brass nozzle quickly, so always switch to a hardened steel nozzle before using them. Some, like nylon blends, also need an enclosure and careful drying.
How to read a spool label
A label tells you more than the colour. Check the diameter, which should be 1.75 mm for most printers, and the recommended nozzle and bed temperatures. Look for drying guidance and any note about enclosures. If a spool arrives with no printing temperatures or a vague description, treat that as a warning sign.
Does printing speed matter for filament?
It does. Fast printers push plastic through the nozzle quickly, and some budget spools can't keep up, producing blobs, stringing or uneven layers. If your printer runs at high speeds, look for filament described as suitable for fast printing, and start with the manufacturer's profile in your slicer before you tune anything.
Genuine versus unknown spools
It's tempting to buy the cheapest spool you can find. But inconsistent diameter, poor winding and hidden moisture often cost more in failed prints than you saved. Hydrotech 3D Chennai stocks filament from Bambu Lab and Elegoo, vacuum-sealed at source, and lists some 1 kg PLA spools at around Rs. 999. Authorised sourcing also matters for brands like Bambu Lab, where counterfeit spools may lack the RFID chip that loads the right settings automatically.
Frequently asked questions
Which filament diameter should I buy?
Almost all consumer FDM printers sold in India use 1.75 mm filament. Check your printer's manual if you're unsure.
What's the best filament for beginners?
PLA or PLA+. It prints at lower temperatures, needs no enclosure and is forgiving of imperfect settings.
Why does my filament snap or print roughly?
It has probably absorbed moisture. Dry it at the right temperature for the material and store it airtight.
Can I use Bambu Lab filament on other printers?
Yes. It's standard 1.75 mm filament, though the automatic profile loading only works on Bambu Lab printers.
How much filament does a print use?
Small models use roughly 5 to 20 grams, medium parts 30 to 100 grams and large prints 150 to 400 grams.
Final thoughts
Good prints start with good material, and whichever 3D printer filament you choose, the habits above will help it perform. Match the spool to the job, store it like you care about it and don't ignore humidity. If you're unsure which material fits your project, ask a specialist before buying.
