But the direction of travel is unmistakable

Despite the clear logic behind material passports, building and adopting them at scale is far from straightforward. One of the most persistent challenges is standardisation. For a material passport to be genuinely useful, the parties creating, updating, and reading it need to agree on data formats, identifiers, and verification methods. Without common standards, passports created by different systems or organisations risk becoming incompatible islands of data rather than an interoperable network, which would defeat much of their purpose. Industry groups and standards bodies are actively working on this problem, drawing on existing frameworks for product identification and data exchange, but achieving broad consensus across diverse industries and jurisdictions takes time.

Data accuracy represents another significant hurdle. A material passport is only Material Passports as trustworthy as the information entered into it, and a system that makes it easy to record false or careless data provides a false sense of security rather than genuine assurance. This has pushed serious implementations toward incorporating verification mechanisms, cross-checks, and in some cases independent auditing, rather than simply accepting self-reported data at face value. There is also the practical question of who bears responsibility for creating and maintaining passport records at each stage, particularly in fragmented supply chains involving many small or informal participants who may lack the systems or incentives to participate fully.

Cost and complexity of adoption cannot be ignored either, particularly for smaller operators who may see material passports as an administrative burden rather than a competitive advantage, at least initially. Successful implementations tend to demonstrate clear value to participants at every stage rather than simply imposing a reporting requirement from the top down, since a system that only benefits the largest players at the end of a supply chain is unlikely to gain genuine cooperation from smaller ones near its beginning.

Material passports are still in a relatively early stage of adoption, but the trajectory is clear. Regulatory frameworks are increasingly pointing toward structured, verifiable product and material data as a baseline expectation rather than a competitive differentiator. Buyers across industries are growing less tolerant of unverifiable sustainability claims, and technology capable of supporting robust, interoperable passport systems has matured considerably in recent years. Organisations that begin building traceability into their operations now, rather than waiting for every regulatory detail to be finalised, are likely to find themselves better positioned as requirements tighten and as sustainability-conscious buyers become more discerning about who they choose to trade with.

Ultimately, material passports represent a shift from a supply chain built on trust and assumption toward one built on evidence and verification. That shift will not happen overnight, and it will require cooperation across an enormous range of industries, regulators, and technology providers to get right. But the direction of travel is unmistakable, and the organisations that treat material passports as foundational infrastructure rather than optional compliance paperwork are the ones most likely to thrive as material markets become more transparent, more accountable, and ultimately more circular.
