A marine heat exchanger is a critical component used on ships and offshore vessels to transfer heat between two fluids—usually seawater and a closed-loop freshwater or oil system—without allowing them to mix. Its primary purpose is to cool engines, generators, and other onboard machinery, ensuring safe and efficient operation in harsh marine environments.
In most marine engines, a closed freshwater cooling system absorbs heat generated during combustion. This heated freshwater then flows through the heat exchanger, where it transfers its heat to seawater drawn from outside the vessel. The seawater absorbs the heat and is discharged back into the ocean, while the cooled freshwater is recirculated through the engine. This process prevents overheating and maintains optimal engine temperature.
Marine heat exchangers come in several types, with the most common being shell-and-tube and plate-type exchangers. In a shell-and-tube design, one fluid flows through a bundle of tubes while the other flows around the tubes within a shell. Heat transfer occurs through the tube walls. These exchangers are robust and widely used in large vessels. Plate-type heat exchangers, on the other hand, use a series of thin metal plates to separate fluids. They offer higher heat transfer efficiency and compact size, making them suitable for smaller ships or where space is limited.
